Body Composition

Body Composition buying guide

A body composition scanner turns one number on a scale into a full picture: muscle, fat, water and, on many models, each arm, leg and the trunk. For gyms and studios, regular scans give members visible progress and a reason to check in with a coach.

Types

What are your options?

Professional BIA analyzers

Segmental multi-frequency bioimpedance scanners such as InBody. Members stand on the platform and hold the handles for under a minute. Highly repeatable, ideal for tracking change over time.

3D body scanners

Camera-based scanners that build a 3D model and estimate measurements and body shape changes. Great for visual progress.

Compact and portable analyzers

Smaller units for personal trainers, mobile coaches and studios with limited space.

Before you buy

What to look for

  • Which outputs your coaches will actually use (segmental lean mass, body water, visceral fat estimates)
  • Member app or portal so people can see their history
  • Software, subscription and result-sheet costs
  • Footprint near the front desk, and contraindications (implanted electronic devices)

FAQ

Common questions

How accurate is an InBody scan?

Research shows InBody devices are very repeatable and agree reasonably well with DXA, with some systematic bias. They're best for tracking change on the same machine. See our InBody research guide.

How often should members scan?

Most studios scan at onboarding, then monthly or quarterly. Scan at the same time of day, before exercise, with similar hydration for consistent results.

Does scanning really help retention?

Research on goal monitoring shows that tracking and recording progress improves the odds of reaching a goal. Scans also create regular touchpoints between members and coaches.
